I am recovering from a weeks-long illness that has left me with a lingering cough. A friend shared her grandmother’s Southern home remedy, an onion simmered in water with a wide variety spices and aromatics. I felt inspired by this Dominican recipe: https://loisa.com/blogs/comida-real/dominicans-are-boosting-their-immune-systems-with-this-traditional-onion-tea, which I modified by adding the wide variety of spices and aromatics…… Continue reading Dominican onion, apple, and spice tea (el té de cebolla)

White sangria
For our first outdoor grilling event this sunmer, we decided to make white sangria. We discovered a wide range of recipes, and we loosely followed this one: https://www.thespruceeats.com/simple-white-wine-sangria-recipe-3511043 We combined the following: 1 standard bottle (750 ml) Spanish white wine, 1/4 cup brandy, 1/4 cup orange juice, 1/4 cup superfine sugar, and 3.5 cups fresh… Continue reading White sangria
Maple old fashioned cocktail
We tried this recipe, and it was tasty: https://cookieandkate.com/best-old-fashioned-cocktail/ In lieu of bitters, we used citrus peel (lemon and mandarin), which we squeezed to release the oils before stirring all of the ingredients in. (Mar. 2021)
Mocha coffee
We generally followed this recipe: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/23538/mocha-coffee/ We tried making my husband’s favorite hot drink. Our modifications: first, stir together 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 Tbsp white sugar, 2 Tbsp milk, and 1 Tbsp half and half (this is our addition). Second, pour in 8 oz strong coffee (we used Laotian). (Jan. 2021)
Caiprinha
Details here: https://www.liquor.com/recipes/caipirinha/ Based on our pantry, we used a mix of lime wedges (skin on) and lemon (without skin or pith). We also recommend using superfine sugar, as it will dissolve more easily. (May 2020)
Korean sweet potato latte

Vietnamese-style iced coffee
I figured out a shortcut recipe. It’s not authentic, but it tastes pretty close. Brew 12 oz of your strongest roast coffee (we use either Lavazza Classico or Trader Joe’s Laos Bolaven Plateau). Spoon 2 tsp to 1 Tbsp sweetened condensed milk (we recommend Longevity brand) into a 2-cup measuring cup. Pour the hot coffee… Continue reading Vietnamese-style iced coffee
Lemon drop
A delicious cocktail courtesy of my wonderful brother-in-law, Gary. He tried this Ina Garten recipe: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lemon-drop-cocktail-recipe-1941226. It was absolutely delicious. (Aug. 2019)
Hot mulled apple cider, version 2
We tried this Bobby Flay recipe: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/mulled-cider-recipe-1943275 Because our orange was unexpectedly sour (almost grapefruit-like), we added a drizzle of honey to the pot before serving the cider. (Jan. 2019)
