My husband loves coffee milkshakes, and our local place had run out. So we tried this recipe: https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-make-a-milkshake-995115 For the ice cream, we used about 5 small scoops vanilla gelato (which already was soft while frozen). To make it coffee flavor, we used ¼ cup Autocrat coffee syrup in lieu of ¼ cup chocolate syrup.… Continue reading Coffee milkshake

Hot mulled apple cider, version 1
We tried Ina Garten’s recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/hot-mulled-cider-recipe.html but adjusted proportions for our amount of fresh cider (6.5 cups). We also sliced half of an orange rather than squeezing it and then adding the peel. (Dec. 2016)
Spearmint tea
We had several sprigs of fresh spearmint from our garden, so we tried making spearmint tea. We loosely followed these guidelines: http://www.balconycontainergardening.com/gardening/322-make-mint-tea but made a few modifications: first, rather than steeping just the leaves, we washed, patted dry, and steeped one handful of mint sprigs (including the stems). Second, we placed them in the bottom… Continue reading Spearmint tea
Indian spiced hot chocolate
This recipe from Aarti Sequiera adds a nice twist to classic hot chocolate with the use of green cardamom, curry powder, and honey. Recipe here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/aarti-sequeira/spiced-hot-chocolate-recipe.html (Jan. 2016)
Lemon-ginger tea
Another recipe from WebMD that has helped my sore throat. You just need 4 lemons, a handful of fresh ginger, hot water, and some honey. I recommend using at least 10 cups water to make sure the drink is not too acidic. Recipe here: http://www.m.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/chicken_soup_and_recipes_for_cold (Apr. 2015)
Cinnamon ginger tea
I was amazed to find this recipe on WebMD: Combine ½ cup thinly sliced fresh ginger, 6 cups water, and 2 cinnamon sticks in a saucepan, then simmer for 20 minutes (or longer for a stronger tea). Add 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar, strain, and serve. http://www.m.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/chicken_soup_and_recipes_for_cold
Ginger honey tea
This is kind of an ad hoc recipe. Using a reduction pan (or any 4 quart pot), mix 2 Tbsp each sugar and honey with about 6 cups water. Add about 1 cup chopped ginger (if you leave skin on, make sure to wash thoroughly). Stir, bring to a boil, then reduce (about 30 mins). Drink straight or… Continue reading Ginger honey tea
