Japanese-style beef and potatoes (nikujaga)

Note: This recipe is flexible and can be modified. For ex, we have used ¼ cup sake instead of white wine. We also have used a mix of daikon (½ lb) and yukon potato (1 lb), each cut into 2×2″ chunks. Finally, we have increased the ground beef from ¾ lb to 1 1/3 lb without adjusting the braising liquids (soy, wine/sake, water) or aromatics (onion, ginger). (Oct. 2018)
